The capital of Portugal enchants not so much with its old buildings - after the large-scale earthquake of 1755, not so many historical monuments have survived in the city - as with the picturesque streets and hospitable atmosphere. The most famous landmark of Lisbon is the castle of St. George, and the favorite place for tourists to walk is the Alfama district: its houses are decorated with the famous blue and white tiles of azulejo. Such areas as Baixa and Chiado are also popular with tourists, and shopping in the latter is no less exciting than acquaintance with the peculiarities of architecture.
